Soda blasting is non-abrasive, and environmentally friendly. Unlike many chemical cleaners, soda (sodium bicarbonate is non-toxic and doesn’t risk leaving lasting heat or chemical damage on the article being cleaned.

Soda blasting also works well as a preventive measure. Drying the sodium bicarbonate into a powdery layer on treated metallic surfaces can retain the cleaned surface for longer before flash rusting begins to occur compared to other cleaning techniques (known as “holding the blast”). Materials such as copper and some other non ferrous metals like bronze and brass are particularly suited to soda blasting being generally too soft for traditional blasting. It tends to leave a much finer surface profile almost a polished effect on these surfaces.

Soda blasting is an effective treatment for a wide range of surfaces including organic materials made of wood, stone and metals including most grades of stainless and carbon steel (mill scale removal).
